Our allotments consist of a large open space with huts around the perimeter, and one of the things we felt the lack of in the garden was more vertical elements. This year's projects are all about creating variations in height among the garden's plants, and of course get more new plants!

Per cut some long willow branches a couple of months ago, and these have been used to make the first - very rustic - arches. The idea is that the pergola will be one interlocking construction, but this is as far as we have come.

As regards what is going to grow on the pergola, we haven't quite figured it out yet. Beans, of course, but is there a climbing squash/pumpkin that doesn't weigh a ton, and there's no such thing as a climbing cabbage, is there? It might be a bit difficult keeping within our crop-rotation system . . .

The row of fruit trees has only one tree so far, an Egremont Russet apple, and we've decided on plums for the other two trees.
