With Autumn well on the way it's time for some changes in the garden. We've decided to relinquish one of our plots (60 m2), so we can concentrate on maintaining the rest properly. This involves a lot of reorganising, perennials to be dug up and replanted, and changes in the strucure of the allotment, which will entail moving even more plants. The historical roses have until now all been in the rose and herb bed in the kitchen garden, which will have to go. Because of this I've dug up more of the lawn around our shed for a new rose-bed, for Celestial, Cuisse de Nymphe/Maiden's Blush, Félicité Parmentier (all Rosa alba), and our two Belle de Crécy (Rosa gallica) and Jacques Cartier (Rosa portlandica). My plan is to plant sweet cicely (myrrhis odorata), calamintha grandiflora and some ornithogalum nutans between them. To avoid looking dreary in late Summer, I've planted persicaria amplexicaulis (from Hann:-)) and yellow helenium. The change from Summer's pale colours to late Summer's vibrant colours will almost be like having two completely different beds!
The large bed to the north of the shed (called the chaos bed) has also had a makeover. The ever-growing swathe of Lysimachia punctata has been removed, and in its place are Henry Martin (Rosa moschata), a Rosa nitida, two Knautia macedonia, and a homeless lovage. In the other half of the bed I've let Hanne's inherited rose loose (Omar Khayyam?? - would love to know its name for certain). This rose has the most delicate pink flowers, and is a complete hooligan. The two sickly plants Hanne gave us have spread by underground shoots to become a thriving colony of 20 plants intent on taking over our garden and our neighbour's garden too! In its new home it will be competing with a vigorous scented-leaved geranium, and a group of perennial Helianthus that are none too polite either. May the best plant win!
